About us

Start with the dog.

One scientist, one dog, an obsession for more time.

Tailmates started with a founder, a dachshund, and the oldest question every dog owner asks: how do I keep her around longer? That question is the whole company.

The story

Hi, I’m Thom.

Thanks for joining.

I started this journey by getting a biotechnology degree out of my interest in longevity in 2021. Then I looked at my dog Tesla and did the math on how much time I had left with her.

In 2023 I started Naturally Royal, a canine longevity supplement company, to help my dog live longer. Now I want to dive deeper into radically extending canine lifespan by building the largest collective research project in the world.

That’s Tailmates. The walks, packs, and games are the fun. The data they build across every dog that joins is how we can help all of our dogs live longer: the food our dogs eat, the medications they’re on, the activities and habits they have, tracked as new interventions come into the world.

The first packmate

Meet Tesla.

Tesla is a dapple dachshund, and she is the reason for all of it. The degree, the supplements, the research, the app you are looking at. Every piece traces back to wanting more years with her.

She is the first packmate in Tailmates, because she is the dog the first version was built for. Every dog that joins after her is joining something that started as one person not ready to run out of time with his dog.

Why Tailmates

The walk is the habit. The longevity score is the payoff.

Research at scale needs dogs tracked the same careful way, day after day. So Tailmates wraps a game around the walk you already take. Every walk earns points, grows a streak, and pulls your pack outside with you.

Underneath the game is a longevity score that shows its inputs and its limits, right there on the screen. It is an educational read, built for everyday wellness. The number tracks the habit; your vet leads the medicine.

And you’re never doing it alone. Tailmates is built for packs: friends, your dog park, your neighborhood, because the surest way to keep walking is a few good companions pulling you back outside.

Our papers

Both papers behind the score are public.

We write the method down and publish it first, so a finding can never be reverse engineered into a story afterwards. That work lives on Frontier Science, the founder’s open-science journal.

Both Tailmates papers are posted there as editorial previews. They are early drafts, not peer reviewed yet, and we update the model they describe as real data comes in. You can read them yourself:

  • Design and computational verification of a transparent canine health-and-longevity composite

A methods paper that freezes exactly how the score is computed, where every number comes from, and what it does not yet claim. Editorial preview, pre-validation.

  • Prospective validation of a dynamic multimodal canine health and longevity model

The protocol for testing the model against real outcomes, written before any data is gathered, so the way we will judge it is fixed in advance. Editorial preview, pre-validation.

Where the walks go next

Tailmates is one half of a company. The other half is working out whether any of this tells you something about your dog, and publishing the method first so the answer can be checked. Sharing is opt-in and always your call.
