What it measures

Genetics is breed, body size, age, and neuter status read against large actuarial life tables: the inherited rate-of-aging your dog started with. Big dogs age faster than small ones, and some breeds simply carry a longer or shorter baseline.

Why it matters for lifespan

It sets the curve everything else builds on, and it’s the one bar you can’t change. We show it plainly and kindly: it’s a starting line, not a verdict. The other three bars are where your daily choices move the needle.

Genetics is framed as fixed, not blamed. A shorter breed baseline isn’t something you did; it just means the levers you do control (weight, movement, and a lab-verified blood panel) matter even more. This bar is a context, never a countdown.

Why a calendar year costs a big dog more

Body size isn’t just a bucket, it changes how fast the clock runs. Through the IGF-1 growth axis, larger dogs age faster biologically than smaller ones, so the same birthday spends more of a large breed’s runway. It’s the clearest, best-evidenced piece of the genetic baseline.

How it moves the score

Mostly in the baseline: the smallest separate weight

Here’s the honest, glass-box part: genetics matters enormously, yet it carries the smallest score weight of any dimension. That’s not a contradiction. It’s because breed and size are already baked into the actuarial baseline that anchors the whole estimate.

Putting a big separate genetics penalty on top would be double-counting the same signal. So the Genetic dimension carries a small weight (about 0.04), and its own extra adjustment is near-zero by construction. The genetics story lives inside the baseline, not in a second charge against it.

How the baseline is assembled

It’s a glass box. Here’s the plain-language version of the math that turns your dog’s signalment into a life-expectancy range.

Look up the life-table row

Start from the breed's own life-table row when we have one, otherwise the row for its size band. This is the age-conditioned remaining-life curve for dogs like yours.

Add the mixed-breed credit

Mixed-breed dogs get a +0.8-year credit over a purebred of the same size, one of the more consistent findings in the data.

Bake in neuter status

Neuter is a baseline term, not a free bonus or penalty, read the way large cohorts actually record it, so the baseline stays honest.

Condition on your dog's age

Read the curve at your dog's exact age. Remaining life expectancy comes out as a range, never a single date, and everything else adjusts the deviation around it.

  • Its own life-expectancy delta is near-zero by design: the breed and size effect is already in the baseline.

What you can do about it

You can’t change genetics, but you can play the hand well

Genetics is the one bar with no “ways to improve” list, because it’s fixed. And that’s the point. What you can do is aim your effort at the bars that move: the harder the genetic hand, the more the modifiable levers matter.

  • Body condition: A well-studied body-condition signal. Tailmates uses a hand-set prior, not an individual intervention effect.

Straight answers about the baseline

Why does genetics carry the smallest weight if it matters so much?
Because most of it is already counted. Breed and size set the baseline curve everything else builds on, so putting a big separate genetics penalty on top would be double-counting. In the glass-box math, D1 Genetic carries the smallest dimension weight (about 0.04) and its own extra adjustment is near-zero by construction: the genetics signal lives inside the actuarial baseline, not in a second charge against it.
Is a short-lived breed a life sentence for my dog?
No individual dog's outcome is fixed by a breed average. Breed and size set the model baseline, while body condition, activity, and lab-validated bloodwork contribute additional signals. Those associations do not quantify how many years changing a signal would add.
Do I need a DNA test to get a genetics read?
No. The whole genetic baseline works from what you already know (breed, size, age, and neuter status), read against life tables. A genetics panel (like an Embark result) is purely optional: when present, known high-impact risk variants sharpen the read a little, but they're evidence-graded C and can only nudge the baseline, never define your dog.
How solid is the science behind the baseline?
The actuarial baseline (breed, size, sex, age against life tables built from millions of dogs) is the single best-evidenced part of the whole score, graded A. The size-to-lifespan and breed-lifespan effects are grade A; variant-level deltas from an optional panel are grade C and near-zero-weighted. We label every grade in-product, and it's a literature-anchored estimate, never an epigenetic clock and never a death date.
