How long do Bernedoodles live?

Bernedoodles are a cross, and the breed studies we use, McMillan et al. 2024 and Teng et al. 2022, give no lifespan figure for them as their own group. The Tailmates longevity score starts a Bernedoodle from the large-breed curve: typically 10.3–12.7 years. Always a range, never a date.

What studies found for related groups

Here is what one study found for each parent breed and for crossbreeds overall. None of these is a Bernedoodle figure: a cross can differ from both parents, and from crossbreeds as a whole.

  • 10.1 years

Bernese Mountain Dogs, a parent breed

Median lifespan, McMillan et al. 2024

    1,116 dogs, 449 deaths. 95% confidence interval 9.8–10.4 years.

  • 14.0 years

    Poodles, a parent breed

Median lifespan, McMillan et al. 2024

    6,427 dogs, 2,399 deaths. 95% confidence interval 13.8–14.1 years.

The study reports poodles as one group, not by size.

  • 12.0 years

    Crossbreeds, all crosses together

Median lifespan, McMillan et al. 2024

    111,053 dogs, 72,445 deaths. 95% confidence interval 12.0–12.1 years.

Every dog the study recorded as two or more breeds, designer crosses such as Labradoodles included.

The curve, not a countdown

Already 2+ years old? The outlook is better than subtraction.

These numbers are conditional on the age your dog has already reached. A dog who’s made it to midlife has cleared the early risks that pull the breed average down. So the honest answer is more than “lifespan minus age.”

Walking needs

How much should you walk a Bernedoodle?

Around 60–120 minutes a day, ideally with some brisk, purposeful stretches.

Band-level guidance, not a prescription. Age, health, and your vet’s advice come first.

Walks on the curve

What daily walks do to the longevity math

In the Tailmates model, a 28-day rolling window of active minutes feeds a saturating curve, the first minutes matter most, and it moves the estimate up by at most +0.5 years, never down. Bounded on purpose: activity has no published year-delta, sick dogs simply move less, and a walk you forgot to log looks exactly like a walk you never took. For a steady daily habit:

+0.2 yr

20 min/day

activity signal

+0.3 yr

40 min/day

activity signal

+0.3 yr

60 min/day

activity signal

The bigger walking payoff is indirect: lean body condition, the strongest modifiable lever in the model. For a large breed like the Bernedoodle, ideal body condition reads +0.5 yr (capped at the +1.8-year effect from the Kealy lean-feeding trial), while carrying extra weight reads -0.7 yr and obesity -1.3 yr. Daily walks are how most dogs stay on the right side of that line.

Bernedoodle lifespan FAQ

Questions Bernedoodle owners actually ask

How long do Bernedoodles live?
Bernedoodles are a cross, and the breed studies we use, McMillan et al. 2024 and Teng et al. 2022, give no lifespan figure for them as their own group. The Tailmates longevity score starts a Bernedoodle from the large-breed curve, typically 10.3–12.7 years. Where a given dog lands is shaped most by body condition, size, and everyday care, not by a single date.
When is a Bernedoodle a senior?
By the veterinary guideline, a dog enters its senior years in the last quarter of its typical lifespan. On the large-breed curve, where the Tailmates longevity score starts a Bernedoodle, that is around 9 years. It is a size-band guide, not a figure for Bernedoodles. Your vet tailors it to your own dog.
