Taking part

What counts as taking part

Say you are going, then walk for at least ten minutes between noon and 1pm Eastern with a walk running in Tailmates. Every walker who does is counted, minute by minute, and the count is what we submit.

  1. 1

    Reply on the event

Open the event in Tailmates and say you are going. The reply is what puts you in the count, so it comes first. Add it to your calendar while you are there and your phone will remind you.

  2. 2

Walk ten minutes inside the hour

Start a walk in the app any time between noon and 1pm Eastern and keep it running while you are out. Ten of those minutes have to fall inside the hour. A long walk that ends as the hour opens does not count, because the claim is that we were all walking at the same time.

  3. 3

    The app records it

The walk is recorded as you go, so there is nothing to submit afterwards and nothing to prove. A walk, a run or a hike all count. Sitting in the voice room without walking does not.

Everyone who takes part gets the World's largest dog walk 2026 badge, and it lands on your profile during the hour.

The record, honestly

This is an attempt at the largest virtual dog walk: everybody walking at the same moment from their own street, not everybody gathered in one field.

The single venue record is a different record and it stands. 22,742 dogs walked together at one place in 2011. We are not trying to beat that in a field, and we will not pretend we have.

We have submitted an application to Guinness World Records for the virtual title and we are waiting to hear back. Nothing has been approved yet, no record has been awarded to us, and if the answer is no, or the evidence rules turn out to be more than we can meet at this size, we will say so and hold the walk anyway.

How the count is measured

We count the walkers minute by minute for the whole hour. Every minute we record how many people are out walking with a reply on the event, and that series of numbers is the evidence for the attempt.

The numbers come from the walks the app already records for you, not from anything anyone types in on the day. The peak minute is the number the attempt rests on, and the final tally goes back to everyone who walked.

Join the event

You need a free Tailmates account to join. Create one in the app, then reply on the event.

The app is free, adding your dog takes a minute, and your reply lands on the event straight away. Bring a friend and their dog. The number is the whole point.
